Whats being noted as the largest crowd to date gathered yesterday on the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver BC, Coast Salish Territories, to honour the spirits of missing and murdered women. This year being of particular significance with the sham inquiry taking place as well as the UN approval of a nationwide inquiry into the feminicide within the borders of this country, which will only take place if the canadian state provides their consent.

This years march was preceded by a rally outside the inquiry courthouse, calling attention to the systematic injustice that continues to be perpetuated.

“We are boycotting this Sham Inquiry because we have been shut out from it and it has continued to marginalize the voices and experiences of women from the DTES. Women continue to go missing or be murdered with no action from any level of government to address these tragedies or gendered violence, poverty, racism, or colonialism.”

Redwire also attending the 4th annual Missing Women’s Memorial March on Lekwungen and WSANEC unceded Territories. The Memorial March was lead by the young girls in the community, and was organized by the young women that comprise the University of Victoria’s Women’s Centre Collective.

“We are here to honour and remember the women, and we are here because we are failing to protect women from the degradation of poverty and systemic exploitation, abuse and violence. We are here in sorrow and in anger because the violence continues each and every day and the list of missing and murdered women gets longer every year,” says Marlene George, Memorial March Committee organizer.

Marches were also held in twelve other cities on the 14th including Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Penticton, Calgary, Kelowna, Merritt, Thunder bay, and London. Representing a clear growing initiative of communities participating in calling attention to an urgent and grave matter.
