Emerging media artist Taren Kootenhayoo (Dene/Nakota), was born in Cold Lake, AB. After relocating to Edmonton, where he attended Victoria School of Performing & Visual Arts, his exploration in media art sparked a new interest for this young artist. Tarens’ original, and still remaining, passion for skateboarding and its fascinating culture, unsurprisingly lead him into the direction of filmmaking and photography.

Courses he had taken in high school allowed him to explore still photography, which is one of his main creative persuits. He currently manages his own blog called Anti-Social, where most of his images are featured, along with his poetry. With his keen eye and skill he is hoping to eventually pursue a career in fashion photography, among his other interests.

                  —————————-  Poetry ——————————

“A trench coat darker than midnight, with lips as red as blood.

Wearing beautiful white heels, covered in filthy silk mud.

A chain-smoking beauty queen with a fool lost in love.

She had dangerously blue eyes,

a She-devil she was.” - Taren Kootenhayoo

His interest in filmmaking began when he was introduced to the Dream Speakers on Tour (DOT), which was a 10-day introduction to filmmaking geared towards Aboriginal youth. For two consecutive summers he took this exciting course and produced two short videos, titled “Unsettled Business” and “May Contain Party.” Both pieces were screened and premiered at Dreamspeakers Film Festival in Edmonton, Alberta.

Through the filmmaking process he realized he enjoyed acting and when he arrived in Vancouver, BC., he began exploring this aspect of filmmaking. He recently played a lead role character in an independent short-film titled “Hubbocks”. Being inspired by this role, he’s still continuing to develop his skills in acting by wanting to attend Capilano University’s acting program in the fall semester. Being new to BC, his creative pursuits have broadened his horizons to new heights and looks forward to taking advantage of all the opportunities present in Vancouver.
